Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The representation of women in politics is a vital component of democratic governance and societal development. In Zaria Local Government, Kaduna State, women’s participation in politics faces barriers such as cultural stereotypes, gender discrimination, and limited access to resources. Print media plays a pivotal role in shaping public perceptions of women in politics by either reinforcing stereotypes or challenging societal norms (Ahmed & Musa, 2023). Through editorials, opinion pieces, and news reports, print media can influence attitudes toward women’s political participation and advocate for gender inclusivity. However, the portrayal of women in politics often reflects biases that may hinder progress toward gender equity. This study analyzes the representation of women in politics in Zaria as portrayed by print media.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to increase women’s political participation in Zaria, print media coverage often perpetuates gender stereotypes and biases, limiting their visibility and influence. The lack of balanced reporting undermines the role of media in advocating for gender equity. This study investigates the representation of women in politics in Zaria, identifying gaps and proposing strategies for more equitable coverage.
